Stress is everywhere, and it is all too easy to let it take over our thoughts if we are not careful. When life gets too busy, we may start feeling under pressure and anxious.
While stress is useful if we need to save our lives from danger, on a daily basis it is not helpful for our bodies to be in this state and it can cause unnecessary tension. When life is so busy and we are constantly multi tasking it’s a good idea to take a few minutes out every day to calm our minds and bodies and gain a sense of peace.
The following exercise can easily be done during a lunch break at work and you don’t even need special equipment. You can do it either standing or sitting on a chair.
But first, a little background: this exercise is based on a technique called Sophrology and you can find our more about it in the BeSophro online course. Sophrology is a dynamic relaxation technique that uniquely combines breathing, movement, visualisation and relaxation. The goal of Sophrology is to help you find the way to a calmer and happier life.
Now, let’s do this relaxation exercise called
The Pump: it’s great for letting go of stress and you should feel the effects straight away. Bring your arms alongside your body, clench your fists, exhale first with your mouth, then inhale through your nose, hold your breath and move your shoulders up and down until you are ready to exhale. As you exhale let go of all the tension you are feeling in your body. You can do this three times and then sit down for a moment of pause.
You may experience a sense of lightness, of relaxation, or of increased energy. By moving your body and working on your breathing, you are shifting your attention from a feeling of stress to a sense of well-being. You may notice that your shoulders are not as tight as before and that you can move your neck more smoothly and easily. The movement also can help bring a fresh supply of oxygenated blood to the brain, making you feel more alert.
We hope you can join us to hear more about Sophrology from the team at the Mindful Living Show on 6-7th March 2020.
