MINDFULNESS IN EDUCATION - MINDFUL NATION UK REPORT
The Mindful UK Report, by the Mindfulness All-Party Parliamentary Group, is a full report which uses evidence from experts across several sectors, who have implemented mindfulness and directly seen beneficial results. The report highlights where policy makers should be investing resources and focussing their attention.
The report looks at the education system in depth, highlighting the alarming statistics about the state of mental health in children and teenagers - approx 10% of children aged 5-16 experience mental health issues and the number of teenagers with depression nearly doubled between 1980 and 2000. It cites that there are 3 key policy challenges in education...
'...The first is the concern with academic attainment and improving results; the second is the deepening anxiety around the mental health of children; the third is the growing interest in concepts (which have been identified as a policy priority by all the major parties) of character-building and resilience which cover a range of non-academic skills and capabilities.
The report looks at the growing evidence that mindfulness training for children shows a range of benefits and can help with prevention strategies to combat mental health issues.
